Good Afternoon and the Sunshine Club
The aim of Good Afternoon and the Sunshine Club is:
- To promote library services and reading and literature in the widest sense
- To offer an activity which is open to all but will appeal particularly to people who are available in the day time To inform people of a range of learning opportunities
- To encourage people to be active citizens

Meetings are held in the Meeting Room, on the third floor.
All meetings start at 2.15pm
A charge of £2.00 unless otherwise stated will be made to cover the cost of speakers expenses and refreshments from the Green Coffee Company.

Treasures from the Reference Store
Sally Heard talks about the history of printing and relates the subject to some
of the old and rare books which we hold at Bedford Central Library.

An afternoon with Pauline Bell
Pauline Bell is a former Halifax teacher, turned crime writer and now lives in Bedford. She
has three grown-up children, one, usefully, a police constable married to a
detective. She has written 14 novels featuring DC Benny Mitchell. Her latest
title is 'Glockenspiel'.

The Quaker emphasis in education lies in participation and caring. Marion Maule
explains the historical background and significance of a Quaker education.

78 Derngate
Robert Kendall gives an illustrated talk on the restoration of 78 Derngate,
Northampton . The house, which is now open to the public, was re-modelled in
1916 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for the model maker W J Bassett-Lowke.

Retired train driver, Bill Davies, gives a talk based on 42 years of railway
experiences.

What goes on under the covers?
Reverend Christopher Damp, minister of Bunyan Meeting Church shares with us his
interest in the art of the bookbinder.

The Fishermen's Mission
Paul Jarrett talks about the work of the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea
Fishermen which aims to alleviate poverty and despair in the UK’s fishing
communities by providing emergency and welfare support to fishermen and their
families.
Monday 14th December
Christmas Special - The History of Pantomime
Sharon Cashman from Milton Keynes Theatre talks about the art of the
pantomime and its association with the Christmas season.
Festive refreshments will be served following the talk.
* Event included in the programme for 'New Beginnings' – a celebration of
older people (formerly known as the Festival for Older People). Taking place in
