What is the Vital Records Index?
Local and family history A-Z
> Vital Records Index

-
The Vital Records Index gives birth/baptism and marriage
records. It is not comprehensive
-
It is produced by the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints as a supplement to their much larger
International Genealogical Index
(IGI) and contains records that do not meet the religious purposes of the
IGI
-
The Vital Records Index for the British Isles covers mainly
birth/baptism and marriage records of England, Wales,
Scotland and Ireland between 1538 and 1888. Its sources are mainly parish
registers
-
Not all counties are represented and some are more completely represented than
others
-
For details on how the British Isles Vital Records Index was compiled and on
how it differs from the IGI, see an
International
Genealogical Index page on the Genuki web site
