Census indexes enable you to search records by specific features
If you use census records online you will be able to search the
records by various
features anyway, so separate census indexes are not normally
necessary
Separate census indexes of names are useful if you are using census
records on microfiche or microfilm, because these records are arranged by area
and by street, not by surname
