For Finding Quotations

Maybe what you are looking for has become so well-used that it is treated as a proverb or saying and is not thought of as a quotation from one individual person, poem or other work
There are many dictionaries of such proverbs and sayings. Some of them may give the origin or supposed origin
You can search the library catalogue for these types of books by choosing a 'Class' search and entering the following library class numbers:
class number 398.9 for dictionaries of proverbs, for example the Oxford dictionary of English proverbs
class number 423.1 for dictionaries of phrases and idioms, for example Dictionary of catch phrases or Cassell's dictionary of word and phrase origins
class number 803 for dictionaries of allusions (a wide range of sayings, catchphrases, historical events, real and mythological characters and more) for example Brewer's dictionary of phrase and fable, Brewer's dictionary of 20th century phrase and fable and Brewer's dictionary of modern phrase and fable
