Are there any past newspapers online?

A-Z how to find information >Newspapers

Newspapers stack
  • Only a few individual newspaper sites allow you to see past articles free. One example is The Guardian, which has an 'Archive search' option on its drop-down menu at the top of the screen
  • However, you can search and view past articles from national daily and Sunday newspapers at Newspapers online on this site
  • Newspapers online gives you two services, the 'Infotrac custom newspapers' and the 'Times digital archive'
  • 'Infotrac custom newspapers' has articles from national daily and Sunday newspapers from as early as 1985 until one or two days ago
  • The 'Times digital archive' gives you the complete digitised version of The Times from 1785 - 1985, including not only articles but also photographs, adverts, obituaries and more
  • The British Library is also making some historical newspapers available online. See the British Library Online Newspaper Archive and The Penny Illustrated Paper for newspapers from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries
  • You can keep up with useful web sites on past newspapers at the Newspapers section of the Gateway to the Internet
