• Reference books online - search encyclopaedias and dictionaries of general art, history, music, languages and more, for example:

Credo reference includes several books on peoples and cultures, such as 'Cassell's peoples, nations and cultures', 'Holidays, festivals, and celebrations of the world dictionary' and Black Firsts', a record of African American achievement stories of barrier-breaking pioneers in all fields

Oxford reference online includes the 'Oxford companion to African American literature', and the 'Oxford guide to countries of the world', a  handbook covering the contemporary social, economic, religious and political issues that shape each country

• Newspapers online - articles from eight daily and Sunday newspapers, from 1996 onwards; for historical information there is also the 'Times digital archive' covering 1785-1985
• Magazines and journals online - includes 'Journal of black studies' (summaries of articles) and 'New internationalist' among others (full articles)
• Encyclopaedia Britannica online - search for people, places and topics and events in this general encyclopaedia
