• Search and browse many historical dictionaries, encyclopaedias and an atlas of world history at Credo Reference and Oxford Reference Online. Find historical themes and lists at Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
• Search Encyclopaedia Britannica Online for specific facts and for long articles on historical topics. This a particularly good place to look for historical overviews of individual countries. Just search for the country name and then check the menu at the left of the country article to find the 'history' section
• At Newspapers Online there are two services:

'Newsstand' - searchable articles from national and regional newspapers of recent decades

the 'Times digital archive 1785 -1985' - a fascinating picture of two hundred years of news. Search and view the complete Times newspaper, including articles, illustrations, photographs and advertisements
