History and Archaeology
A-Z how to find information
|
|
-
Find useful history and archaeology web sites at
Gateway to the Internet > History and
archaeology
-
For Bedfordshire's history and archaeology, see the separate
Local and family history section
-
Reference books online -
you can search many historical dictionaries and encyclopaedias
and an atlas of world history at
Credo reference and at Oxford reference online, while
you can find works on specific themes at
Gale virtual reference
library
-
Magazines and journals
online - the collection includes 'Antiquity', 'British heritage',
'History today' and 'Journal of British studies', among others
-
Newspapers online - you can find news from years ago in the two online
newspapers services:
the 'Infotrac custom newspaper database' gives you searchable articles from
national daily and Sunday newspapers from July 1985 onwards
the 'Times digital archive 1785 -1985' gives you a fascinating picture of two
hundred years of news. You can search and view the complete Times newspaper,
including articles, illustrations, photographs and advertisements
-
At
Encyclopaedia Britannica online you can search for specific facts and for
long articles on historical topics. This a particularly good place to look for
historical overviews of individual countries. Just search for the country name
and then check the menu at the left of the country article to find the 'history'
section
