Health and Care

A-Z how to find information

  • The main National Health Service web site for the public is NHS Choices
  • NHS Choices gives you medical advice, information on medical conditions and treatments, healthy living, contact details for doctors, dentists, hospitals, chemists, opticians and much more
  • For more, specially selected, health and care web sites see Gateway to the Internet > Health and Care
  • You can search many major health reference books in the collections at Reference books online

Credo Reference includes, for example, 'Black's medical dictionary', 'Royal Society of Medicine health encyclopaedia' and 'Dorland's illustrated medical dictionary'

Oxford Reference Online includes, for example, 'The Oxford companion to the body', 'Concise medical dictionary' and 'An A-Z of medicinal drugs'.

  • At Magazines and journals online you can find full-text articles, abstracts or references depending on the title and the date. Titles include 'The lancet', 'British Medical Journal', 'British journal of ophthalmology', 'Safety and health practitioner', 'British journal of psychology' and 'Annual review of psychology'
  • At Newspapers online you can search for health news items from eight daily and Sunday newspapers, including the 'Financial times', from July 1985 onwards; for historical information there is also the 'Times digital archive' covering 1825-1985
  • For local health and care information, see You and Your Community (YoYo)
