A search engine looks for web sites which contain word(s) or phrase(s) you want to find. If your search is successful you will see a list of these sites. All search engines work slightly differently and will produce different results.
A directory will guide you through your search by providing you with a series of subject headings and sub-headings until you reach relevant web sites. Directories can be very useful if you need an overview of a subject or are not sure where to start.
