National Art Library at the V & A
Based at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the National Art Library is the UK's national art reference library. You can visit in person or contact the library by e-mail, fax or phone. Search their catalogue online and click "Finding Information" for helpful sources and links. "Finding information about artists" has a useful list of major art sources and auction sales records held at the library.

This is a very comprehensive site. It includes links to art collections, images and information about artists, plus lists and links to libraries, university history of art departments, conferences, organisations, publications and online teaching resources.

VADS: the online resource for the visual arts
This extensive collection of over 100 000 visual arts images from VADS (the Visual Arts Data Service) is a wonderful resource bringing together very diverse collections. These range from the National Inventory of Continental European Paintings and the Design Council Archives and Slide Collection, to the Central St Martins Museum and Study Collection. Fully searchable, you can find images of embroidery, hats, houses, furniture, posters and Victorian items for example.
