Samuel Wray volunteered for the army, for the parish of Kempston, in1796. He was sent to Ampthill to be sworn in on the 18th December. He joined the 68th Regiment of Foot and remained in Bedford until 14th January 1797 from where he received orders to march to Colchester, joining the 68th Regiment. He then received orders to march to Chatham and joined the 61st Regiment of Foot, commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Crowthers. Here he began to learn the discipline of a soldier and received his regimental clothing. The first guard he mounted was on a prison ship.
