The Chequers Inn at the corner of Silver Street and High Street. For several generations the landlords of The Chequers acted as gaolers to the old County Gaol where Bunyan was imprisoned, which stood next to the pub until 1802. The Chequers was rebuilt in 1888 and then converted into The Palace Cinema in 1912. The cinema was demolished in 1936. (Beds Times 28th July 1988)
