Bedford
Bedford Castle
Siege of the Century
Bedfordshire on Sunday 9th April 1999

Falkes de Breaute took over castles in Luton and Bedford and began a reign of terror throughout Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire lasting for eight years. He was then brought before three judges at Dunstable and fined £100, a fortune at the time, for each of 30 offences of extortion. His response was to have one judge imprisoned in Bedford Castle. The royal army besieged Bedford Castle, the castle was captured, the defenders hanged and the castle left in ruins.
