Amistad
The horror of the slave's journey on "Amistad" the slave transporter ship is brought to life in this vivid film. Spielberg directs this by comparing life on board ship with the opulence of the traders using minimum language and graphic visuals.

Cry Freedom
Stephen Biko (Denzil Washington) the South African freedom fighter's life is played out as he battles with apartheid through his life and death. The brave newspaper editor Donald Wood (Kevin Kline) is trying it seems almost single-handedly to change the world; (the film is based on his book). The injustices of the time are highlighted with a strong political message.

Gladiator
Maximus is a powerful Roman general, loved by the people and the aging Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Before his death, the Emperor chooses Maximus to be his heir over his own son, Commodus, and a power struggle leaves Maximus and his family condemned to death. Maximus is unable to save his family, and his loss of will allows him to be captured as a slave and put into the Gladiator games until he dies.

This thrilling emotional very long movie spans a hundred years of slavery. Kunta is captured in 1750 and his story and that of his ancestors is traced through their harrowing lives to freedom. An excellent cast including Maya Angelou and Moses Gunn bring the characters alive in this true story.

Spartacus
Classic 1960's epic saga of Spartacus a gladiator trained slave in ancient Rome. Kirk Douglas as the hero fights for his life and freedom and leads slaves in action packed battles .The inhumanity, torture and crucifixions show the Romans in their full brutality. Laurence Olivier, Peter Ustinov and Jean Simmons play the dominant characters.
